Teknoware Exterior lighting for DB Cargo’s Freight Locomotives
Teknoware supplied the exterior lighting system for 64 locomotives as part of a refurbishment project, carried out by Alstom, in which the lighting systems of Deutsche Bahn Cargo’s freight locomotives were upgraded to meet the latest technical standards.
Previously, the exterior lights of the 6506 series freight locomotives comprised of five incandescent lamps. These were replaced with three Teknoware Vision units—multifunctional headlights that combine headlight, marker light, and tail light modes in a single compact unit. The performance of the Vision luminaires exceeds that of traditional incandescent bulbs, reducing the number of luminaires needed per locomotive.
“As a result of the project, the locomotives were equipped with a modern and certified lighting solution,” said Timo Turunen, Export Manager at Teknoware. “In addition, cost savings were achieved with fewer lights being needed for each locomotive.”
Deliveries began in late 2023 and were completed in the summer of 2025.
